Magazine chef’s weight-loss story

July 13th, 2005

So I learned today why Chef’s wear those big, baggy white jackets!

“They can hide how overweight you are,'’ jokes Cooking Light Executive Chef Billy Strynkowski.

Mercury News has a neat article about a once-obese chef who worked at a food magazine that managed to lose 60lbs. How did he do this? Eating right and exercising! Yes folks, you heard it, no magic pills or supplements, just hard work.

Weight Loss and Osteoarthritis

July 13th, 2005

Found an interesting article over @ MedicalNewsToday that talks about how a losing a pound of fat results in a four pound reduction in knee-joint load for each step.

As part of a long-term study of the effects of diet and exercise on knee OA, researchers at Wake Forest University found that an average weight loss of 5 percent in overweight and obese older patients brought an 18 percent gain in overall function.

…Researchers found a significant association between weight loss and reduction in compressive knee-joint loads. In fact, the force reduction was 4-times greater than the actual weight reduction.

Are you experiencing pain in your knees and overweight? Hopefully this news will inspire you to lose a few pounds! Knee OA is not uncommon! Osteoarthritis is the leading disability in the United States. For many people, each step is filled with pain. The best thing you can do is start losing weight.

Xenadrine weight loss claims false

July 13th, 2005

From The Washington Times:

The Federal Trade Commission has accused RTC Research & Development LLC of making false weight loss claims for its dietary supplement Xenadrine EFX.

The FTC said advertisements for the Xenadrine EFX falsely claimed it produced rapid and substantial weight and fat loss without the need for either diet or exercise. The ads appeared in numerous magazines and on television.

A study was done by the FTC to examine the effects (if any?) Xenadrine has. One control group took a placebo pill, and over 10 weeks lost an average of 2.5 pounds. On the other hand, subjects taking Xenadrine only lost an average of 1.5 pounds over the 10 week study!

The incredible thing is that sales of Xenadrine EFX have topped $160 million! When will people learn that these fad supplements are a waste of money?

Weight-Loss Surgeries Skyrocketing

July 12th, 2005

Found an interesting article at Forbes.com regarding weight-loss surgeries. As you can tell by the headline, they are on the uprise.

The number of Americans who had weight-loss surgery quadrupled between 1998 and 2002, new research shows.

This isn’t too suprising, but what suprised me is the cost of such procedures. Forbes mentioned these surgeries costing on average $13,215, up from $11,705 a year ago. Jesus I could think of much better ways to spend that money. I only hope that the people getting these weight-loss surgeries are changing the way they eat and excercise as well. Just because you have lost 50 pounds doesn’t mean you are healthy (yet!).

Here’s a sad fact from the article:

The current obesity epidemic has left almost one-third of the U.S. population obese (with a body mass index or BMI of 30 or greater), and close to 5 percent are morbidly obese (with a BMI of 40 or higher).

We need to change our lifestyles fellow Americans! Stop with the fast food! Stop with the lazyness!

I’m not strictly against weight-loss surgeries, I just think that you still need to change the way you live after surgery. For some people though, it’s a great kick start.

Studies of people who have had surgery for obesity, on the other hand, found that, with gastric bypass, patients lost 61.6 percent to 70.1 percent of their excess weight. As a result, 76.8 percent of individuals saw their diabetes disappear.

Welcome to my blog!

July 1st, 2005

Hi folks :)

My name is Diane, and i’m dietaholic. I spend many hours every week reading various reviews about programs and supplements, the latest scientific studies regarding weight loss, and everything in between! I realized that it would be beneficial for others if I provided links and summaries about all of this information on one web site (not everyone has as much free time to spend online as I do!).

I’m still getting use to the “blog” software. If you notice any problems, please email mail (AT) weightlossx.com. My husband Neil is the ‘tech’ guy, so he is setting all of this up for me.

Again, thanks for checking out my weight loss blog, and I hope you come back! In the coming weeks I hope to provide lots of great diet-related information for y’all!
